Challoner 10: Quick Wins and Top Tips!

After a quick numeracy starter and overview of the whole-school numeracy initiatives for the coming year (thanks to Gabby Veglio (Yr9 Year Leader and numeracy coordinator)), we had a quick look at the plan for observations and lesson visits for the coming year. Following that, it was straight into a whistle-stop tour through our Challoner 10 to identify quick wins.

As much as anything, this was about taking the opportunity to revisit the 10 and to start hanging some flesh on the skeleton that the Challoner 10 provides…

The first message out of the bag was, intentionally, related to high expectations. We are a high-achieving school and behaviour is typically very good. Nonetheless, the logical place to start the year seems to be with a focus on high expectations: of student behaviour, of student outcomes, and of staff…

This video (and a little spiel from me about the school being the joker in the pack – a joker that trumps whatever other cards a student has been dealt (ability, aptitude, family background etc) and has to remove any barriers facing any students) was a nice place to start…

"To ensure that teaching is of the highest quality there should be a shared excitement across school. Teachers need to talk teaching with passion and enthusiasm. To achieve this, leaders must build strong networks in which good practice can be shared. There should be a magpie approach to improving teaching, seeking out new initiatives but not adopting them wholesale, selecting what works in the school context and blending a range of approaches for success." Aitken & Spellman, 2012, National College Opinion Piece.
